Why does my competitor show up in ChatGPT and I don't?
Because the AI can read their business and can't read yours. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews don't maintain a directory of good contractors; they assemble answers from what's publicly crawlable: the text on your website, your structured data, your reviews, and mentions of you on other sites. A competitor with a fast, crawlable site, clear service and city pages, and machine-readable structured data is quotable, so they get quoted. A business whose site is a slow page-builder shell with three sentences of text gives the AI nothing to work with, so it recommends someone else.
How AI assistants actually choose businesses
When someone asks 'who's a good cabinet maker near Lake Mary,' the assistant runs a live search or pulls from its training crawl, reads the pages it finds, and synthesizes an answer with the businesses that were easiest to understand and best corroborated. That means the winners are decided by boring, checkable things: does your site say plainly what you do and where you do it, does your structured data identify you as a local business with a service area, do your reviews and mentions on other sites agree with your own story. There's no secret AI ranking to buy. It's legibility plus corroboration.
The checklist that makes you quotable
First, a site AI crawlers can actually fetch and parse: fast, real HTML text, not text baked into images, and a robots.txt that doesn't block AI crawlers. Second, pages that answer questions the way people ask them, with the answer stated directly rather than buried under marketing copy. Third, LocalBusiness structured data so machines get your name, phone, and service area without guessing. Fourth, a Google Business Profile and review base that agree with your site. Fifth, being mentioned anywhere other than your own site (directories, suppliers, local press), because assistants weight corroboration.
None of this is exotic. It's the same substance that wins ordinary local SEO, applied with the discipline of actually answering questions in plain text.
The honest caveat, and why we bother anyway
AI search is early. Nobody controls what an assistant says, volumes are still smaller than classic Google, and anyone selling you guaranteed ChatGPT placement is lying. But the work is not speculative: everything that makes you legible to an AI also makes you rank better in regular search today, so the downside is zero. We practice this on our own site: every page on deepsignalstudio.com is built to score 100 on the AI-readiness section of our own report card, and you can run your site through the same checks free and see exactly what the machines see.
